Carolyn Matthews
Artist-in-Residence, Blues City Cultural Center


Carolyn Matthews – a poet, educator, storyteller, and arts activist – is an artist-in-residence with Blues City Cultural Center. As a resident artist, she edited Don’t Count Me Out: Contending Voices, a narrative collection of creative expressions by seniors who participated in Seek to Serve, a BCCC grassroots leadership project. Matthews is also a Cave Canem Fellow and National Endowment for the Humanities grantee. Her 2005 middle school poetry project was published by the Benjamin Hooks Institute for Social Change and profiled by Animating Democracy, a program of Americans for the Arts. Her poetry and prose have appeared in The Laurel Review, Newsmagazine, Jewel Magazine, Homespun Images: An Anthology of Black Memphis Writers, and Cave Canem Anthology XIII: Poems 2010-2011. As an arts advocate, Matthews has served on the board of directors of several Memphis arts organizations.
