Smartphone Historical Walking Tour Application
Shannon Keller, Dominic Roberts, Conference Speakers

The Cedar Rapids Cleveland Area Neighborhood Association (CANA) in collaboration with the City of Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Information Technology Department, Parks & Recreation Department, Cedar Rapids Veterans Memorial Commission, Cedar Rapids Neighborhoods and the Cedar Rapids History Center have developed a walking tour smartphone application highlighting local history.

Our presentation includes the organizational coordination and planning of the project as well as a demonstration of what it does and how it works. Several display markers have been installed in the neighborhood with informational plaques. The plaques includes a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone. The code takes you to an application that uses geo-coding to know where you are on the walking tour and the suggested next stop to stay on the route. Also, there is significant additional historical content and video accounts of citizens that relay their stories of actually living that history and passing the stories down to the next generation. It is a real source of community pride, involvement, education and oral tradition. The hope is that the efforts in this neighborhood will be adopted into a citywide walking tour.
